This Month's Feature

In May, we celebrate Mother's Day, and what better way to show your mother how much she means to you than to prepare a bountiful feast for her? After all, over the course of a lifetime, she's provided breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinners galore!

Perhaps you can start with Sarah's Flat Barley Bread, named for the mother of Isaac, Abraham's heir. Follow with Rebekah's "Tasty Dish," a delicious lamb stew named for the mother of Esau and Jacob, Isaac's heirs. Serve with Abigail's Lentil Dish, made from lentils, rice, tomato sauce, and spices and named for the mother of King David's son Daniel. As a side dish, prepare Bathsheba's Crispy Baked Potatoes with Rosemary, named for the mother of King Solomon. Don't forget Gleaner's Artichoke and Cheese Casserole, named in memory of Ruth, who was the great-grandmother of King David, and her mother-in-law Naomi. Finish with Apricots Abigail, a delicious sweet fritter with an apricot center. For dessert, don't forget Elizabeth's Carob Cake, named for the mother of John the Baptist, and Mary's Almond Cookies (Mamool), named for the mother of Jesus. These cookies are a fitting ending to a Mother's Day meal, since May is also the month when many honor Mary as the Blessed Mother.

Each meal has three sections:

First are the mouthwatering recipes inspired by events described in the Bible, like "King David's Nuptials", "A Meal in the Wilderness", or "The Prodigal Son Returns".

Next we've listed all the ingredients necessary to understand what's at stake in the biblical text the meal is drawn from, while also trying to answer how the words of the Bible can be relevant to those encountering them today.

Finally we offer a brief history and background of the biblical passage that inspired the meal and recipes.
